They learned not to listen long before they ever worked for you.
Think back to being a kid getting told off by a parent or a teacher.
You weren't really listening were you.
You were just waiting for it to end.
You looked at your feet, you said sorry, and the second it was over you went straight back to whatever you were doing.
Your team is doing exactly the same thing.
They've spent their whole life learning that the fastest way out of being told to do something differently is to agree and move on.
So when you pull them aside and tell them to change, they nod.
They say yep got it.
And then they walk away and nothing changes.
It's not defiance.
It's just deeply ingrained human behavior.
And here's the hard truth.
If you keep using the same approach, telling and repeating and getting frustrated, you're going to keep getting the same result.
Nothing.
The only way to break through this is to stop telling and start coaching.
Ask questions instead of giving answers.
Get them thinking about the problem themselves.
Because when your team finds the answer on their own they actually own it.
And when they own it they follow through.
That's how you finally get your team to listen.
