Serial killer film are almost a sub-genre unto themselves, with the success of Silence of Lambs (1991) in particular leading to various variations on the theme and latterly true crime miniseries celebrating Dahmer, Gein, Bundy and all manner of ghouls.

Vengeance is Mine (1979), directed by Shohei Imamura, who would subsequently twice win the Palme d'Or, is based on the life and times of Japanese murderer Akira Nishiguchi. Whilst it doesn't flinch in its depiction of the man's violence or voracious sexual appetite it is his psychology that most fascinates. I saw this one years ago and certain scenes have stayed with me.
