World PTSD Awareness Day | 27 June
When people think of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), they often picture combat veterans. While that is entirely real, the truth we see in general practice is that PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a deeply shocking, scary, or dangerous event. PTSD is a specific condition where the brain’s alarm system gets stuck in ‘survival mode’ long after the threat has passed.
This includes surviving a major accident, a sudden medical emergency, a natural disaster, or enduring prolonged interpersonal or family trauma. If you or someone you care about has been through a traumatic event, look out for these four core patterns:
- Vivid flashbacks, nightmares, or intense emotional distress when reminded of the event.
- Steering completely clear of places, people, or thoughts that trigger memories of what happened.
- Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, irritable, or struggling to sleep because your system is on high alert.
- Feeling detached from loved ones, struggling to feel positive emotions, or experiencing persistent blame or guilt.
At Tui Medical, we can help connect you with the right care, including the services available through Tui Allied Health. This includes psychology services and Rongoa Maori support, offering different pathways to healing that can be tailored to your individual needs and wellbeing journey.
If trauma is continuing to affect your daily life, reaching out for support is an important first step.
