Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder, meaning it affects your nerves. In short, your immune system normally protects you by fighting off infection, but in MS it attacks the nerves by mistake which can result in paralysis and complications such as spasticity, trembling, Ataxia, bowel dysfunction and cognitive abnormalities. Multiple Sclerosis can be a very lonely, challenging condition to live with, which is why we believe it is so important to take part in raising awareness each year.
There is currently no cure for Multiple Sclerosis and whilst every individual is different, treatments are available that may slow its progression and alleviate associated symptoms. Exercise is an important component in managing MS as the increased activity may be able to assist MS patients in being less likely to develop certain complications, such as bowel dysfunction, permanent muscle contractions, or ulcerations of the skin. Biokineticists can
help with an exercise program specific to your limitations and needs. Find a Biokineticist to walk this journey with you at www.Biokineticssa.org.za.
