July is Fibroid Awareness Month. While many women live with fibroids without ever knowing it, for others, these non-cancerous growths can significantly impact daily life. From heavy periods to persistent pelvic pain, the symptoms are real and manageable.

Common symptoms include:
• heavy periods (heavy menstrual bleeding)
• abdominal (tummy) pain or a swollen tummy
• pelvic pain
• pain during s*x
• a need to urinate (p*e) more often, if a fibroid is pressing on your bladder
• constipation (hard poo, difficulty passing poo), if a fibroid is pressing on your bowel

Symptoms depend on how many fibroids you have, their size and where they are.

June is Infertility Awareness Month. In Aotearoa, approximately 1 in 4 people experience infertility, and 1 in 8 will require medical assistance to grow their whānau.

Infertility is defined as being unable to conceive after one year of trying, or the inability to carry a pregnancy to a live birth. Whether the cause is female-factor, male-factor, a combination, or simply unexplained, the emotional weight is real.

Some of the best ways to deal with infertility are to be informed and to talk about it. This is not always easy or comfortable. If you are dealing with infertility, you might find it helpful to:

• talk to friends and whānau who are supportive

• see a counsellor to talk through your feelings and options

• talk to someone else who has been through what you are going through and who understands
