This was the view from my windscreen this morning.
I’d jumped in the car early, off to my first appointment of the day—supporting an organisation on the journey of resetting its culture.
But I didn’t get going right away.
The windscreen was iced over. Visibility was zero. I had to sit. Wait. Warm up. And only then could I move forward safely.
And it hit me…
Leadership is a lot like that.
You can have the best intentions, a clear destination, and an important mission—but sometimes you’ve got to pause before you act.
🧊 You’ve got to warm up the team.
🧊 Defrost the tension.
🧊 Wait for clarity.
Leaders who charge ahead without addressing what’s clouding the culture often miss what’s really going on underneath. But when you make space to warm the environment—to reset mindsets, restore trust, and bring visibility—you create conditions for real movement.
Today reminded me:
Progress without clarity is just motion.
And great leadership knows the difference.
Have you ever had a “windscreen” moment in leadership—where waiting brought more results than rushing?

WARNING ⚠️
Unpopular opinion ahead ⚠️
Let’s stop calling them “courageous conversations.”
They’re conversations.
Human-to-human. Leader-to-team. Peer-to-peer.
Somewhere along the line, we started attaching big labels — difficult, challenging, courageous — and with those labels came pressure. Pressure to prepare the right script, pressure to pick the perfect moment, pressure to nail the strategy.
But leadership isn’t about performing.
It’s not about showing up with the right “move.”
It’s about how you show up.
Your presence. Your intention. Your ability to truly be with your people in real time — not over-processed and over-practised, but present and connected.
We’ve created a generation of leaders who overthink conversations they simply need to have.
Who spiral into stress, over-planning instead of listening.
Who focus on doing the right thing… and forget the importance of simply being who their people need in that moment.
Here’s the truth:
🧠 No one remembers your strategy.
💛 They remember how you made them feel.
Leadership is not about scaling mountains.
It’s about cultivating relationships.
And those moments of connection? They shape culture far more than any strategy ever could.
Let’s stop raising the stakes on normal human interactions.
Let’s shift the metaphor — and ease the pressure.
Leadership is already hard enough!
And when we get the BEING right, the DOING follows…

🔥 LEADERSHIP WITHOUT A PLAN LOOKS LIKE THIS 🔥
Let’s be honest — this is hilarious.
But in leadership? This is also terrifyingly real.
Too many leaders hit crisis mode…
…and the only “plan” is to run.
🔺 No clear strategy.
🔺 No defined roles.
🔺 No calm in the chaos.
Just hope, hustle, and a whole lot of reaction.
John Maxwell reminds us: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
So let’s apply that:
✅ Do you know the way your team will navigate pressure, change, or conflict?
✅ Are you modeling calm, clarity, and courageous decision-making?
✅ Can your team see the path because you’ve communicated it with conviction?
🧭 REAL LEADERSHIP IS PROACTIVE.
Maxwell teaches the Law of Navigation:
“Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course.”
📌 Practical Principle: “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”
Leadership is not about reacting louder or faster.
It’s about thinking ahead, preparing your people, and instilling confidence before the storm hits.
💡 Ask yourself today:
➡️ What’s my version of the “evacuation plan”?
➡️ Is it clear? Is it practiced? Is it visible?
Because in moments of pressure, your people will follow what’s been prepared — not what’s improvised.
👇 What’s a leadership “evacuation plan” you’ve put in place that made all the difference?
