Brighton Trapping Project

We want to kick off this page by introducing the Brighton Trapping Project team! We're all Brighton locals, love this place, work on the trapping project as volunteers and have different roles. Here's a little about each of us and our roles:

Ritchie
Role: the trap guy
From a rural background and an engineering career, I want to bring some of these skills to the project. Be it dropping off traps,

building or repairing, I want to see loads of traps out there reducing predators of our native birdlife and bringing more birdsong back to this amazing wee community. Tom
Role: Trap.NZ guru & chew card surveillance
My family and I live on a small farm just south of Brighton. My wife and I are both vets and I run a company focussed on livestock disease control. Some of my work includes assessing the impact of predator control on eradicating bovine tuberculosis throughout NZ. I'm really passionate that we can do the same locally and see thriving, well-protected wildlife in our own paradise right here. Baza
Role: all-rounder
My first name is Barry but I prefer to be called Baza. I have had an interest in pest control since an early age, being brought up on a farm. I am enjoying my involvement with the Brighton Trapping Project, especially getting to know the other people involved and members of our local community. Emma
Role: trapping advice (via Facebook) & Trap.NZ admin
Over the many years of travelling and living in different countries I have developed such a strong interest for wildlife, conservation, and environmental management that I decided to shift career and study these topics as a mature student at University of Otago, of which I am currently enjoying full time. I am excited to be a part of this important project and am looking forward to getting to know the local community better and to see more native species in our neighborhood. Claudia
Role: trapping advice (via Facebook) & all-rounder
My partner and I live on a lifestyle block just south of Brighton. I'm a science filmmaker and writer, and have worked on some pretty incredible conservation projects. These include being a hunter on a rabbit and rodent eradication in the sub-Antarctic islands, and a coordinator to help school teachers and students track and trap predators in Dunedin. I look forward to providing all our backyard trappers with advice and running my own trapline to increase our local birdlife. We'll provide lots of advice and updates via this page - so make sure you 'like' the page to stay connected. We need your help.
We're looking for a volunteer for a fortnightly check of possum, rat and stoat traps on the outskirts of Brighton.
The track is on private land.
About 2 hours every fortnight.
Would suit someone with moderate fitness. Well behaved dogs ok. Training and support provided.
This is one of our strategic lines that ring-fences part of the main Brighton predator control area.

Are you interested in trapping on your land?

Thanks to a generous donation of possum traps from the Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group, we can set up residents who have land anywhere between Kuri Bush and Westwood as trap hosts.

What we do: We supply the traps on long-term loan, help you set them up, and train you in their use and how to record catches. You become part of our trapping community (which includes things like potluck dinners and an active Whatsapp group for tips and feedback), and we give you long-term support.

What you do: Your commitment is to check, clear and rebait the traps once a week, and record your checks and catches. You'll have a lifestyle block (or bigger) with possum habitat on or adjacent to your land. You'll be able to host at least 3 tree-mounted possum traps spaced 100 m apart.
