Netsafety Week 2026 is coming this August

This year’s theme, Online safety is a team sport — play your part, is all about coming together to help create safer online spaces across Aotearoa New Zealand.

⚠️ Stalking is a pattern of repeated and unwanted behaviour that causes fear or distress. It can happen both online and offline through phones, social media, location sharing, fake accounts, messaging, and other digital spaces.

From today, stalking will officially become a criminal offence in Aotearoa New Zealand. Under the new law, repeated behaviour directed at another person that is likely to cause fear or distress may be considered stalking, including behaviour carried out online or through digital technology.

Online stalking can include:
• repeated unwanted messages or contact
• monitoring someone’s activity or location
• fake accounts or impersonation
• threats or intimidation online
• sharing or threatening to share private information or intimate images
• attempts to access someone’s accounts or devices 📱

Netsafe has worked alongside Women's Refuge New Zealand
, Shine, The Light Project, Auckland Women's Centre to develop guidance, support, and practical safety information to help people better understand stalking behaviours and where to seek help. 💜
