After a big site measure yesterday in sunny Auckland, I was reminded (again) just how critical accurate site measurements are.
It’s something I can’t stress enough with clients — if your base plan isn’t right from the start, everything that follows is compromised.
I recently worked on a project where I was given a landlord’s plan to design from. After three attempts trying to make the layout work, it became clear the issue wasn’t the design, it was the plan itself. No one had actually been to site to measure, it was all based on outdated council drawings.
One quick site visit and a proper measure later, everything fell into place. The space planning worked exactly as it should and the project has been running smoothly ever since.
But getting to that point… a lot of unnecessary time lost.
If a client is investing in a space, the foundation has to be accurate. A proper site measure ensures there are no discrepancies down the line — whether with builders, joiners, or other trades.
Get the base right and everything else becomes a whole lot easier.

Being a 'jack of all trades' definitely has its perks. From all design aspects including CAD detailing to lighting design and full fit-outs, I love being involved in every stage of a project. But every now and then, it’s really nice to step away from the office and get out exploring - especially when that includes shopping (one of my favourite pastimes!).
Many of my projects involve sourcing props for displays, artwork, mirrors and planting. These final touches are what really elevates a space - making it feel homely, layered and complete. Scatter cushions, greenery, unique pieces… it’s all in the details. One project I’ve been working on for a while is now in it’s final stages on site, which means it’s time to hunt down those finishing elements to bring everything together.
Photo is me in the office, slightly bogged down by recent finds that need sorting into categories. Once I’m on site, it’ll be an easy (and fun) job. The best part of the process!

2026… here we go!
Sticking true to my previous post, I’m determined to be more active and visible on LinkedIn this year. To kick things off, I thought I’d share a before and after from a fun little project completed the week before Christmas — quick, fast-paced and extremely satisfying.
The Fiddler is a small (but perfectly formed) authentic Irish bar right in the heart of Auckland. In need of an update, we created a new, timelessly styled back bar along with a new bar top, fancy new beer taps and a new bar façade - all while maintaining the traditional moulding and corbel details. The aim was to deliver a refreshed look while staying true to the character that make the space what it is.
The old versus the new was swapped over in an incredibly short timeframe of just a couple of days. Datum Projects Limited were on board to make this happen in a seamless, stress-free manner. Thanks to Datum for the smooth transition — The Fiddler now has a revitalised new look and most importantly, a very happy client.

Skycity always endeavours to ensure their staff are well looked after. At Skycity Hamilton, Burning Red Design, along with Design & Build partner Complete Construction, had the pleasure of updating the existing back-of-house facilities into an enjoyable and relaxing space. Gone is the uninspiring, unused rabbit-warren zones. Staff are now welcomed into a calm and peaceful environment.
With soft wood accents, a charming ‘trailing orchid’ wallpaper with complimentary colours, this uplifting space is going to be great for staff morale.
This revamped space promotes a great community spirit, encouraging staff to use it more often and be proud of their working environment.
Thanks Cintesi Furniture for adding the final touches with the walnut timber furniture.
Thanks to Frankie, Greg and the amazing team at @ Complete Construction Ltd for their hard work on this project. The outcome is amazing!

Something & Social, a new bar and restaurant, has recently opened its doors in Albany, offering a serene and aesthetically pleasing environment. The interior is beautifully designed with soft and calming tones, featuring oak timber detailing and its signature colour palette of navy blue and biscotti. Lush plants and stunning hand-cast glass pendants add an organic touch to the space.
Beyond the indoor beauty, Something & Social also boasts several outdoor areas perfect for relaxation. A large courtyard is available for patrons to enjoy a variety of drinks, while various seating pockets seamlessly flow into the interior, creating a harmonious indoor-outdoor experience. With its fantastic design and inviting atmosphere, Something & Social promises to be a delightful destination for everyone.
A big thank you to all involved with this project: Steve Mann from Conpro, Andy and his team from Unique Creative and everyone else who contributed. Thanks Paul: Chester Hospitality for the opportunity to be included in this quick, fast but fun project. Good luck to the Something & Social team, I'm sure you’re going to be busy!
