We use the term FSL to describe function-spacer-lipid constructs that are dispersible in water and can spontaneously incorporate into cell membranes or coat surfaces. If the construct does not have these minimum features it is not termed an FSL construct. FSL constructs represent a large variety of different functional heads, with each functional head capable of being carried by variations in both spacer design and lipid tails. As a consequence a single functional head can be presented as multiple FSL variations.
