🏠 CCS FOUNDATION FACT FRIDAY: CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS FOR BRICK & BLOCK HOMES – HOW THEY WORK
Did you know brick and block homes rely heavily on a strong, stable concrete foundation? Unlike lightweight cladding systems, brick and concrete block construction carries significant weight, meaning the foundation underneath must be designed to support and distribute those loads correctly.
How the concrete foundation process works:
1️⃣ Site assessment – The ground is assessed to determine soil conditions, drainage requirements, and foundation design requirements for the structure.
2️⃣ Excavation and preparation – The site is excavated and compacted to create a stable base for the foundation system.
3️⃣ Footings and reinforcing – Concrete footings are formed and reinforcing steel is installed to strengthen the foundation and help manage structural loads.
4️⃣ Concrete placement – Concrete is poured to create the slab or foundation system that will support the weight of the brick and block walls above.
5️⃣ Curing and construction – The concrete gains strength over time before construction continues with the structural walls and framing.
How foundations can be repaired:
When movement or settlement occurs, replacement isn’t always the only option. Concrete foundations can often be repaired using underpinning, which helps strengthen and stabilize the existing foundation system. Underpinning works by transferring the load of the structure to stronger, more stable ground below and can help correct or prevent further movement.
Fun concrete foundation facts:
🔨 Brick and block homes can place significantly more load on foundations than many lightweight-cladding homes.
🔨 Concrete doesn't instantly reach full strength after being poured — it continues curing and gaining strength over time.
🔨 Reinforcing steel inside concrete helps control cracking and improve structural performance.
🔨 Small movement beneath a foundation can eventually show up as cracks in walls, sticking doors, or uneven areas around the home.
🔨 Not every foundation issue means starting from scratch — underpinning can often provide a practical solution to stabilize and repair existing foundations.
At CCS, we carry out foundation repairs including underpinning solutions for concrete foundations, helping restore support and long-term stability to homes.
