Suburbs Scorpions
A tough game following last weeks 27-21 win against College Rifles Bullets who we lost 38-5 in our first A grade game of the season. A very good indication of how this team have improved.
This weeks game against Pakuranga Orange at Bells Park was always going to a scrappy affair especially after the lat time the teams met at Avondale Raceway. And surprise surprise it was. With the wind at our backs in the first half we largely positioned ourselves in the oppositions half for most of the half. Slowly building pressure. The boys took some time to get into their stride and appeared to get a little rattled by there aggressive and unsportsmanlike opposition. All said and done they went to the break 17-10 ahead with three tries and one conversion. From the beginning of the second half the boys converted the built pressure into a string of tries that resulted from good ball from the forwards and strong running from our backs. With five tries coming from our wings and full backs William, Riki and Nico and one from the centre Ronny it showed how well we moved the ball wide. A great effort by Bailey, Finn and Flynn with good quality ball for our outside backs and many strong barging runs coupled with superb tackling. A strong game from all the back line both on defence and attack secured this great win. Our forwards secured good ball although often a little slow at times to second phase and frequently too high at set phases. A much improved performance though on previous weeks from our loose forwards. The constant off sides, hands in rucks and poor control and inconsistency from the ref frustrated everyone and too often this spilled over into the game. Head high tackles, stomping on players and kicking players from the opposition without consequence was a poor standard of play and all too common from this Pakuranga side. Our tight five grafted all day and Daniel Roscoe well deserved his player of the day performance. Great to see William and Sam have some great breaks and gain some confidence in the process. Good kicking from Flynn with 4 from 6. Well done boys. Another good win 38-20.
