A "short leg" refers to a condition in which one leg is structurally shorter than the other. This difference in leg length can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
-Genetic: Some people are born with legs of slightly different lengths. This is known as inherited leg length differential and is the result of genetic factors inherited from one or both parents.
-Injuries: Traumatic injuries can lead to a structurally short leg by directly influencing growth plates or bone development, or by increasing or decreasing overall leg length in the healing process after the growing years.
-Surgical Interventions: Surgeries involving the leg or hip can sometimes result in a leg length discrepancy if not properly managed during the procedure.
-Pathology: Conditions such as Perthes Disease or hip dysplasia, )which is a condition of abnormal hip joint development) can lead to uneven leg lengths.
Having a structurally short leg (often previously undetected) can cause many musculoskeletal conditions including scoliosis, back and joint pain, headaches/migraines, disc degeneration and even arthritis of the hips or spine. It’s always important to diagnose and accurately correct all leg length differentials as a priority when treating chronic pain or movement difficulties.
