Raf Simons - Redux

The ‘Raf Simons Redux’ covers the first decade of Raf’s work, spanning from 1995 - 2005. Without a doubt, this time period is where Raf conceived some of his brands most memorable and iconic collections/shows.

Born in Nerpelt, Belgium, Raf didn’t initially think fashion was his calling. “As a student I always thought that fashion was a bit superficial, all glitz and glamour…” Raf said in an interview. It wasn’t until he attended an early Maison Margiela show that his views changed; ”…but this show changed everything for me. I walked out of it and I thought, That’s what I’m going to do. That show is the reason I became a fashion designer”.

From the earliest days of Raf Simons, the driving influences and messages behind his work has been intertwined with youth/teenage culture. The rebellious and unlawful nature of youth is greatly reflected in Raf’s early collections, and still remains a very prominent theme is his more recent work.

Raf’s influence in todays fashion/pop culture is very apparent. With references in hip-hop and an endless list of celebrity cliental, Raf has engrained himself and his brand as an absolute powerhouse.

These slides are just a few examples of his work from his debut decade in the industry, and really highlight the influences both behind and what would foreshadow his own work and the culture he would later create.
