An early morning M 5.7 earthquake with light shaking has occurred 146 km deep in the Cook strait region/ offshore north of Nelson. It was felt across the country along both coasts and we have received over 13k+ felt reports. For more detail, see https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/2022p771854
Our on-duty seismologist says earthquakes like this are uncommon but not unusual. They are widely felt because of their depth and location. On the month of New Zealand ShakeOut, quakes like this are a good reminder to be prepared – check out https://getready.govt.nz/en/involved/shakeout/
