WHAT IS EFFECTIVE NETWORKING?

At an African Business forum, the question of effective networking came up, and we were asked about our experiences.

Here are my thoughts about the topic:

I actively network when I DON’T need it (someone called it PRO-ACTIVE NETWORKING).

It relieves pressure and helps me truly connect with or take a real interest in the person I’m networking with.

I’ve found that this approach yields a positive outcome in the long term.

How I “Pro-actively” Network in New Zealand👇🏾:

I find someone interesting (perhaps through attending formal and informal events)

I identify an alignment between our works, reach out for a coffee chat or virtual meetup, not to pitch myself or my work, but to learn more about them, and why they do what they do.

This is how I internally confirm any alignment I initially observed.

Then I tell them what I do and offer to support them in specific ways.

That way, the relationship blossoms, and if I actually do need something from them it’s pretty easy to make an ask (of course, WITHOUT ANY SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT).
