Allenton Rugby Club

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of one of our Life Members and true giants of the Allenton Rugby Football Club, John Grieve.

For more than 50 years, John dedicated himself to our club. Whether it was managing the Senior team through the late 1980s and into the mid-1990s, giving countless hours of his time, supporting the club through his business, or quietly contributing behind the scenes, John's commitment to Allenton was unwavering.

Affectionately known as "Big John", small in stature but with an enormous heart. He embodied everything our club stands for. His generosity, loyalty and passion for Allenton simply cannot be measured. The impact he had on this club over five decades is impossible to put into words.

The truth is, Allenton Rugby Football Club would not be what it is today without John. Alongside Dawn, he helped shape the club into the community it has become, leaving a legacy that will continue to be felt for generations to come.

John was, in every sense of the phrase, an Allenton Club man. He was deeply respected, immensely valued, and will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

On behalf of everyone at Allenton Rugby Football Club, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dawn, the Grieve family, and all those who are mourning John's passing.

Thank you, John, for everything you gave to Allenton. Your legacy will live on in this club forever.

A casual memorial service to celebrate Big John’s life will be held at the Allenton Rugby Club, Melrose Road, Ashburton, on Friday 24 July at 3pm. In true Big John style, ties are strictly optional and preferably not worn at all. Come as you are, raise a glass, and celebrate the big man himself.

Our support has been huge all year and we will need all we can get tomorrow!
Rug up and head down to Hampstead rugby ground for a 1 oclock kick off!
