A standard game of netball is 60 minutes.
The ball has to be passed at least every three seconds. This results in the ball being passed (at an absolute minimum) 1,200 times a match.
Every time a player catches the ball, an umpire has to check seven things involving the player with the ball and their opponent (footwork, contact, how they got the ball, obstruction, offside etc.).
Almost simultaneously, the umpire has to look down the court and check other players are in their correct areas and are not blocking each other in their attempts to move. This could involve scanning 10 different players, while keeping one eye on the player with the ball and their opponent.
So thatโs seven things, involving the player with the ball, plus potentially another 10 players to watch, each with three actions involved (contact, obstruction and offside).
Thatโs 38 different actions to watch for per pass, including the held ball rule. 38 times 1,200 passes equals 45,600 decisions umpires make per match. Even if that figure is split between the two umpires, thatโs still 22,800 decisions each.
22,800 decisions a match! And thatโs assuming players take the maximum three seconds to pass the ball. The real figure is probably much higher.

SIDELINE NOISE
๐ฉ Instead of yelling โwatch your passesโ from the sideline each time there is a turnover - say nothing or say โitโs okay - work hard to get it backโ
๐ The player already feels bad for passing the ball away - why make them feel worse by yelling โpassesโ - they know - they get it
๐ฉ Instead of โyelling out play by playโ with direction on where players should move and what they should do - let them learn on their own.
๐ Training is the time for play by play direction.
What you have been working on in training will now be a reflection of what you see on court - let the players learn by trial and error and give feedback at the intervals.
๐ฉ Instead of yelling โcome on girls(boys)โ in a frustrated tone - let the players work through the issues on their own and say nothing.
๐ This is where development can grow. Players/teams know when things are not going right - be their one support system that they need in the moments when things are not going well - not someone they fear coming to at each interval.
๐ Grass roots community netball is where we should be supporting players to be better and do better - and most importantly feel INSPIRED to take anything on - this can not happen if players donโt feel that energy from you, question everything they do on court and are afraid to make mistakes๐
Happy game day tomorrow ๐งก
