From May 20–29, 2025, a dedicated team Dr. C. Scott Watson, Dr Lauren Rawlins (University of Leeds) and Mr. Rajendra Kumar Shrestha (NDRI), led by Dr. Scott undertook a 10-day research expedition in Nepal’s Everest region under the GLO-FHICC project. They surveyed glacial lakes in Thame, Thengpo, Dig Tsho, and Gokyo using drone and sonar technologies.
Two lakes in Thengpo were found to be highly vulnerable to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), a growing threat fueled by climate change. Data from the field will support a Glacial Lake Observatory platform, designed to improve flood early warning systems and strengthen community preparedness.
Parallel to this, Mr. Shrestha also led a study under the ECONOGENESIS–CLARE project in collaboration with UK-based Paul Watkiss Associates, focusing on the impacts of the August 2024 GLOF in Thame Village. Through interviews with local disaster representatives, the research documented the social, economic, and environmental damages, especially on marginalized groups.
These efforts aim to ensure that climate adaptation strategies are inclusive, evidence-based, and responsive to the realities faced by mountain communities.
