Transformation Through Rupantaran Class; Experience of Alina Lohar

Alina Lohar, an active member of Rupantaran group, is a Grade 8 student at Shree Janakalyan Secondary School in Sanfebagar Municipality 4, Achham. Before joining the Class, she described herself as a quiet and shy girl and growing up in a rural setting, she felt hesitant to express her thoughts and feelings openly, and cultural norms further limited her confidence.

Her journey toward change began when her class teacher informed about the formation of an adolescent girls’ group for girls aged 13 to 17, which would participate in Rupantaran Classes conducted twice a month, focusing on reproductive health, mental health, gender-based violence, and creating safe spaces for girls. Alina was immediately excited and eager to join, and with her parents consent, became an active member of the group. Once she began attending the classes, Alina experienced gradual yet meaningful changes in her understanding and behaviour. She learned about adolescence; what it means and how to discuss the physical and emotional changes that occur during this stage of life. The sessions encouraged her to open up, allowing her to share her problems more comfortably. She no longer avoided school and began to feel less isolated. Her confidence grew as she practiced expressing her thoughts during group discussions and activities.

Alina also became more aware of the cultural practices in her community, especially those related to menstruation. While it is still common for women and girls to be required to stay outside during menstruation due to traditional beliefs, Alina now feels empowered to question them, and she has also noticed positive changes emerging in her family’s attitudes. Her parents regularly ask about her learnings, making her feel proud and supportive.

One of the aspects Alina enjoyed most about the Rupantaran Classes was the interactive and practical approach to learning. Unlike traditional classroom lessons, it included games, activities, and open discussions that made learning enjoyable and engaging. Through these experiences, she developed a sense of belonging within the group and discovered new strengths within herself. The transformation she experienced has been significant. Alina now believes that the knowledge and self-awareness she has gained will help her contribute to positive change in her home and community.
