Biratnagar

Biratnagar (Nepali: विराटनगर) is a sub-metropolitan municipality and third largest city of Nepal after Pokhara.The town is located in Morang District in the Kosi Zone of eastern Nepal. It lies 399 km east of the capital Kathmandu, 6 km north of the border of the Indian state of Bihar. The old name of Biratnagar was Gograha Bazaar. In 1914 AD, Colonel Jit Bahadur Khatri, the district governor, laid the foundations of modern Biratnagar by moving the hospital, post office, jail and the customs, land registry, forestry and auditor offices to Gograha Bazaar from Rangeli, the district capital of Morang at the time. Biratnagar got its present name in 1919 AD from Keshar Shamsher Rana after objects of historical importance, believed to be of King Virata's time, were found in the place. The region is believed to be a part of the kingdom of Virata, mentioned in the Mahabharata. The ruins of the palace along with stone carved tools, idols and household objects can be seen protected in southern part of Biratnagar, close to the border. In Nepali "birat" means huge and "nagar" means city.

In March 4, 1947 first anti-rana movement in Nepali soil took place in Biratnagar as Biratnagar jute mill strike under the leadership of Girija Prasad Koirala along with Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala. Then after it sparked a countrywide anti-Rana demonstration that finally led to the abolishment of Rana rule in Nepal.

Ghorepani

Ghorepani is a village in Myagdi District in the Dhawalagiri Zone of northern-central Nepal. It lies 17 kilometres from the district capital of Baglung at an elevation of approximately 2874m (9429ft). The village lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) and contains a number of "guest houses" that provide lodging and meals to mountain trekkers, many of whom spend the night before a pre-dawn trek to the top of nearby P**n Hill (3210m/10531ft) to watch the sunrise.

The place used to be a rest stop where ancient traders found water (pani in Nepali) for their horses (ghora in Nepali) thus leading to the nomenclature Ghorepani.

Ghorepani lies on a major trail linking several other villages as well as the Annapurna Base Camp. From the South-East direction, it can normally be reached by foot from the village of Birethanti in about 10 hours depending on the trekker. However, many trekkers prefer to overnight at one of the lower villages on their way to Ghorepani, covering the distance over two days owing to the steepness of the trail, the increase in altitude and the beauty of the natural surroundings. From the North-West direction, Ghorepani can be reached in about 8 - 10 hours starting from Tatopani. This trail passes through the villages of Shikha, Dana and Chitre.

Annapurna Conservation Area

The Annapurna Conservation Area is Nepal's largest protected area covering 7,629 km (2,946 sq mi) in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas across the Manang, Mustang, Kaski, Myagdi, and Lamjung districts. The area ranges in altitude from 790 m (2,590 ft) to the peak of Annapurna I at 8,091 m (26,545 ft). The Annapurna Conservation Area was established in 1985 and gazetted in 1992. It is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation.
