We are pleased to announce the 2026 FORART lecture “Living with the Ghosts of Tomorrow: Imaginaries of the Future in a Time of Ecological Crisis”

How can we imagine the future in a time of crisis — when the future no longer functions as a placeholder for the unforeseen, but appears instead as a horizon stripped of possibility, colonized by the present?

For the 2026 FORART lecture, philosopher Juliane Rebentisch examines the challenges this poses for both utopian and dystopian imagination, tracing the humanist and posthumanist endgames of our time. Moving beyond these frameworks, she advocates for a conception of the future that reworks Jacques Derrida’s 1990s concept of “hauntology” — a way of thinking through the entangled relations of past, present, and future that lets us reckon with those not yet born, human and non-human alike, and confront the structural uncanniness of a time truly out of joint.

Juliane Rebentisch is professor of philosophy at Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, a regular visiting professor at Princeton’s German Department, and a permanent fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. She served as President of the German Society of Aesthetics (2015–2018) and received the Lessing Prize of the City of Hamburg in 2017. She is the author of Ästhetik der Installation (Suhrkamp, 2003), Die Kunst der Freiheit (Suhrkamp, 2012), Theorien der Gegenwartskunst (Junius, 2013), and Der Streit um Pluralität: Auseinandersetzungen mit Hannah Arendt (Suhrkamp, 2022), among other edited volumes spanning aesthetics, political philosophy, and critical theory. She is currently working on questions of perception, imagination, and representation in a time of ecological crisis.
