DH - Pattern Grading and Sizing

Pattern grading is the process of creating a range of sizes for a single style. This isn't something that most people will need to do; but a professional pattern designer has the expertise.

Pattern grading is complex. It is not a matter of linear scaling and it is never to be used to change your volume, balance or ease. Grading is done from a sample size (SS), for example L for Men or M for Women. The SS is typically at the midpoint of your size range to get the best results. Pattern making systems use “Grade Rules” to describe the offset for a measurement point on the pattern to the next size up or down.
