🌍 Government-to-government minerals deals. A minerals super-cycle. Intensifying competition for critical resources. Rising demand for the minerals needed for AI. The world of resource governance looks very different today from when the EITI was founded in 2003 – and these shifts are raising new challenges for and governance.

How should the EITI adapt? This blog reflects on discussions among EITI Board members on how the organisation can build on its unique strengths – including its multi-stakeholder model, globally recognised Standard and its role in providing data relevant to decision-making – to respond to a changing world.

🌍 How can communities play a stronger role in shaping decisions on a changing extractive sector and the energy transition?

On 24 June, EITI hosted a webinar on “Engaging communities in a changing extractive sector”, launching a new toolkit to support EITI countries in strengthening subnational and community engagement.

Developed through "Engaging communities in a just transition," an EITI project supported by the Ford Foundation, the toolkit provides practical guidance for using data, dialogue and inclusive approaches to engage communities in a changing extractive sector.

The discussion brought together speakers from 🇨🇴, 🇬🇭, 🇮🇩, the 🇵🇭 and 🇸🇳, who shared practical examples of how EITI implementation can support local dialogue, improve access to data and create space for communities to participate in decision-making.

Key takeaways included:
✅ Local voices strengthen governance. Including communities, women, youth and marginalised groups helps ensure that decisions reflect the realities and priorities of those most affected by extractive activities.
✅ Data works best when it's accessible and locally relevant. EITI data helps communities understand revenues, environmental impacts and decision-making when presented in formats that respond to local needs.
✅ Trust is built through sustained dialogue between communities, governments, companies and civil society
✅ Participatory approaches make engagement real - town halls, storytelling and local engagement platforms all create space for communities to take part.
✅ Inclusive processes lead to better outcomes, ensuring engagement reaches beyond the usual stakeholders.
