It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Inferno Metal Festival’s Jan-Martin Jensen after a hard-fought battle with cancer. This is profoundly difficult for all of us in the Inferno family. We are absolutely heartbroken.
Jan-Martin meant so much to so many, and to everyone who loved music in Norway. His memory will live on through the joy he brought to countless people by organizing thousands of concerts and the Inferno Metal Festival.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Jan-Martin Jensen Named Bylarmer of the Year
The festival director and founder of the Inferno Festival, Jan-Martin Jensen, has been named the Bylarmer of the Year 2025.
Jan-Martin Jensen is a veteran and a legend in the Norwegian music industry. A person who works quietly behind the scenes, never seeking attention for himself, he ensures the focus remains where it should be: on the music.
Jan-Martin commands deep respect in the Norwegian music industry. He has always done things his own way, carving his own path with quiet determination, humility, and unwavering passion. It’s never about Jan-Martin—it’s about the organizers, the festivals, the venues, and the artists.
A Career Built on Passion for Music
Jan-Martin Jensen moved from Bodø to Oslo in the early 1980s. With experience running a rock club in Bodø, he quickly established himself in Oslo as a sound technician. Later, he worked in booking and management for two of Norway’s most iconic bands: Life... But How To Live It? and Mayhem. He founded the highly influential Inferno Metal Festival and was instrumental in introducing indie/alternative and rave/techno culture to Norway through Zone Production in the early 1990s.
A Personal Testimony
Joakim Haugland, a board member of the By:Larm Foundation, shared a personal story:
*"On a personal level, Jan-Martin was my first contact with the Norwegian music industry. I can say that he is the reason I, along with several other young people from Flekkefjord, entered the Norwegian music scene and have the jobs we have today.
As 16-year-olds in a small town in Southern Norway, we were hungry for music and culture. But how could we experience the world from Flekkefjord? The answer was simple: we called Jan-Martin. We were met with the highest level of professionalism, and most importantly, we were seen—and taken seriously—despite our young age and lack of experience.
This led to some incredible years filled with concerts by bands from both Norway and abroad, shows that changed our young lives. Jan-Martin always made time for us, everything was meticulously planned, and we felt safe. For me, this story says everything about Jan-Martin, both as a person and as a professional in the industry. Quite simply, Jan-Martin is the real deal."*
