A recent report by SINTEF Ocean, commissioned by the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority, Havtil, points to a clear industry shift: operational criteria for DP-operated vessels should move from single-statistic thresholds toward risk-adjusted, probability-based criteria.

That matters.

Because offshore crews do not operate in averages. They operate in real sea states, with changing wind, waves, swell, directionality, and uncertainty.

For DP decision-making, the question is no longer only: “Are we inside the limit?”

It is also: “How confident are we that the vessel can stay safely within operational boundaries under the conditions we actually have?”

That is where real-time measurement becomes critical.

When the sea state changes, decisions need to change with it.
