Our Science for Preschoolers lessons start on 26 May, and the lab is almost ready for action. If you have been meaning to book a spot for your 3- or 4-year-old, now is the time to secure it.

Is STEM too much, too early for young children? 🧪🤔

It is something I hear quite often, and I completely understand why. "STEM" can sound like a big, academic concept; something children should focus on later, not now.

But here at Smart Start Kids and Mini Professors Den Haag, we know that for young children, STEM doesn't look like school. It looks like:

🧱 building and designing
🔧 tinkering and testing
💡 creating and experimenting
💧 exploring and getting messy
❓ asking "what happens if...?"

Children are naturally curious. They don’t need to be pushed into learning because they are already doing it every day through play. What they do need is the space and opportunity to explore, try, and figure things out in their own way.

Is STEM te veel of te vroeg voor jonge kinderen? 🧪🤔

Het is een vraag die ik vaak hoor en ik begrijp heel goed waarom. "STEM" klinkt als een groot, academisch concept; iets waar kinderen zich later pas op zouden moeten focussen.

Maar bij Smart Start Kids en Mini Professors Den Haag weten we dat STEM er voor jonge kinderen helemaal niet uitziet als school. Het ziet eruit als:

🧱 bouwen en ontwerpen
🔧 tinkeren en testen
💡 creëren en experimenteren
💧 ontdekken en lekker vies worden
❓ vragen "wat gebeurt er als...?"

Kinderen zijn van nature nieuwsgierig. Je hoeft ze niet te pushen om te leren; ze doen het al elke dag door te spelen. Wat ze wel nodig hebben, is de ruimte en de kans om op hun eigen manier te ontdekken en dingen uit te vogelen.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our wonderful science mums! 💐🧪

To the mums who encourage the "Whys," who don't mind the messy experiments at home, and who are constantly nurturing their children’s curiosity, today is for you.

Being a parent is often the ultimate science experiment. It involves a lot of observation, constant testing of new theories, and plenty of trial and error!

I hope you get a chance to take a break and enjoy your day. I am looking forward to seeing you and your young scientists back in the lab very soon.

Fijne Moederdag aan alle powervrouwen in het lab! 💐🧪

Vandaag zetten we de moeders in het zonnetje die nooit moe worden van alle "waarom"-vragen. De mama's die niet bang zijn voor een beetje knoeien tijdens een experiment en die de nieuwsgierigheid van hun kinderen altijd vooropstellen.

Eigenlijk is het moederschap de mooiste vorm van wetenschap. Je blijft observeren, nieuwe dingen uitproberen en je verbazen over de wereld door de ogen van je kind.

Geniet van deze mooie dag en laat je lekker verwennen. Ik zie jullie en de kleine professoren heel graag snel weer in het lab!

"Aren't they a bit young for science?" 🧪

It is a question I hear often. We usually think of science as a school subject for older children, but at ages 3 and 4, children are actually natural scientists.

They spend their days observing, testing, and asking "Why?" about everything they see. At Mini Professors, we don't try to teach them complex formulas. Instead, we nurture that curiosity to help them develop a scientific mindset.

Why start science at age 3?

✅ Critical Thinking: They learn to observe small details and predict what might happen next.
✅ Confidence: Trying an experiment and seeing a result gives them a massive boost in their own ability to figure things out.
✅ Resilience: They learn that if something doesn't work the first time, it is just an opportunity to try a different way.

Our new Tuesday sessions are designed for these curious minds. It is 100% hands-on and specifically for English-speaking preschoolers.

Fijne Koningsdag from the Lab!

While the streets of The Hague turn orange today, we are busy prepping for two weeks of discovery.

Did you know that in the world of science, orange is one of the most high-visibility colours? It is the colour of energy and heat. That is perfect because we are bringing heaps of both to our holiday camps starting tomorrow.

We hope you have a wonderful day of celebrations and flea markets. I will be seeing many of you in the morning to kick off our first adventure.

There is a specific look in the eyes of a child when they discover something for the first time. A mixture of surprise, pride, and pure curiosity.

My journey with preschool science started with that look. When my son was three, we began doing small experiments at our kitchen table. Those weekend mornings became our time to explore together, something we both looked forward to.

I loved watching him learn. We built density towers, made lava lamps, and watched volcanoes erupt right there in our kitchen. It showed me just how much a three-year-old can gain from hands-on discovery.

After two years of teaching my older groups here in The Hague, I am so excited to open a new Tuesday morning class just for preschoolers. These sessions are designed for 3- to 4-year-olds, the same age my son was when we first started.

Starting 26 May, our Tuesday mornings will explore:

🔬 An introduction to science
☁️ The physics of weather
🧲 The invisible pull of magnets
🌈 Colour mixing
🌋 The joy of a bubbling volcano

These sessions are all about nurturing natural curiosity and building confidence through hands-on exploration. Children build new vocabulary naturally through what they see and do; words like “erupt” and “absorb” come to life in a meaningful way.

Sessions are currently offered in English.

In our first Mini Professors session of the year, our little scientists will become vulcanologists. We’ll explore how pressure builds up under the Earth's surface and, of course, create our very own bubbling eruptions in the lab!
