In the Netherlands, there are regulations in place to ensure that landlords do not charge more than the legal rent limit. This rent limit is based on various factors, such as the size, quality, and location of the rental property.
It's worth noting that while some landlords may charge more than the legal limit, not all tenants may be aware of this fact or may not have the resources to challenge their landlord. Additionally, some landlords may use loopholes in the law to justify charging higher rents.
If you're a tenant in the Netherlands and believe that you're paying more rent than legally permitted, you can contact .nl for advice and support on how to handle the situation.

Is your landlord paying for your water bill?
Make sure to keep track of your meter readings! Write down the numbers the day of moving in, on the 31st of December of each year ánd on the day you are moving out.
This way you don't end up paying for the consumption of the previous or for the next tenant of your apartment.
The same applies to the meter for gas and electricity in your house.

‼️ Did you move apartments? ‼️
Make sure to check your rental price as soon as possible after moving in.
If you start a rent reduction procedure within the first six months, your rent will be reduced to the legally permitted maximum, from the beginning of your rental contract.
If you don't take action within the first six months, you may not be able to apply for a reduction anymore since your rental price is considered to be in the free market.
