The Story of Nijenrode Bier – A Taste of Breukelen
We enjoyed this local craft beer at SameSame Thai restaurant in Breukelen. Nestled along the picturesque River Vecht and inspired by the historic castle of Nijenrode, Nijenrode Beer was born from a simple idea: to capture the spirit of Breukelen in a bottle.
The journey began in 2010 when entrepreneur Harvey Wells, then a student at Nyenrode Business Universiteit, set out to create a beer that reflected the rich history, character, and entrepreneurial tradition of the area. Together with brewer Huib van der Stam, he developed a distinctive amber ale after months of experimentation and tasting.
Named after the iconic Kasteel Nijenrode, whose history dates back to the 13th century, Nijenrode Beer combines craftsmanship with local heritage. Brewed using natural ingredients, unfiltered and unpasteurized, it undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle, resulting in a rich, full-bodied flavor with subtle spicy notes.
What started as a passion project has grown into a proud local product—one that celebrates both the history of Breukelen and the innovative spirit that continues to thrive there today.
From a Brooklyn perspective, maybe we should encourage a collab with The Brooklyn Brewery D**e Beer or other enthusiasts…
