Experiments SBL
While we watch a movie, we share the experiences of the actors we observe: our heart for instance starts beating faster while we see an actor slip from the roof of a tall building. Specific brain areas are involved when we perform certain actions or have certain emotions or sensations. Interestingly, some of these areas are also recruited when we simply observe someone else performing similar acti

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS FOR A PAID STUDY
Looking for individuals to participate in a paid experiment. This experiment investigates how people choose between alternatives involving conflictual outcomes for the self and others and individual differences between these choices. Payment is 8 Euros per hour. You can find more information on the flyer!
If you are interested in participating, please send an email to [email protected] with the subject “PainGain”.

Hi Everyone!
The social brain lab (The Netherlands Institute for neurosciences) is currently looking for volunteers for a paid experiment (45€+bonus). Please contact us if you are interested and don't hesitate to share with your friends!
WHAT? We would like to invite you to participate in this research project. The main aim is to understand better the neural mechanisms at play in hierarchical situations.
You will be tested by pairs. One of you will be the ‘commander’ and the other one will be the ‘victim’, but at the middle of the experiment your role will be switched, so it’s fully reciprocal. In one of the experimental condition, you will be entirely free to decide to give an order to an executor (a human or a robot) to administer or not a shock to the other participant in exchange of +€0.05 during 60 trials. In the other condition you will receive the instruction from the experimenter to transmit her order to the executor, again during 60 trials.
Procedure for the shocks: The ‘victim’ will wear two electrodes on the non-dominant hand. Shocks will be delivered using a constant current stimulator (Digitimer DS7A). Participants’ individual pain threshold will be determined for the two participants before starting the experiment. The pain threshold that will be chosen by each participant will never change during the experiment and two experimenters will be always present to supervise.
When you will be in the role of the commander, your brain activity will be recorded in a MRI scanner. fMRI is a non-invasive technique to measure brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow.
HOW MUCH? The experiment will last +-4.5 hours and you will be paid minimum 45€ (the exact amount will depend on your choices during the experiment). It includes your presence for the experiment + questionnaires to fill in online before.
WHERE? At the Spinoza Centre for Neuroimaging (nearby the AMC). More information about how to go there will be provided in the information letter that we will send you by mail if you apply.
INCLUSION CRITERIA:
- Age between 18 and 36
- Be right-handed
- Don’t candidate at the same time than a friend
- Have a normal or normal-to-corrected vision
- Not having metal in your body (braces, etc.)
- Not being pregnant
- No history of psychiatric disease or neurological disorders
HOW TO PARTICIPATE? Please send a mail to [email protected]. In that mail, indicate the name of the experiment (COMMANDER expe1), you name, age, gender, a phone number and your studies. Tell us what day(s) you would be available to come in:
- Wednesday August 7th, 8:50AM
