Have you ever wondered why your shot times aren’t matching up? Your technique and puck prep is on point and you weigh your dose but nothing seems to help?

Then perhaps it’s not you but your machine that’s at fault.

Plus or minus a second or two isn’t the end of the world. But when group one pulls a beautiful extraction in 28 seconds and group two gives you a 10 second dribble then maybe there’s something deeper going on.

Most espresso machines have a flow meter. A little device that measures the volume of water going through your group head.
- Water goes in one way
- It then spins an impeller (picture 2)
- The electrical part of the flowmeter then counts how many times the impeller rotates based on the magnets embedded (picture 3)
- These rotations are then be translated into pulses, grams or millilitres.

After some time mineral deposits build up due to hard water. These deposits then bond to the metals inside of your machine and restrict the flow of water. As you can see in picture 1 and 3 there is some mineral build up!

Thankfully this is an easy fix however a competent technician is required 🙋‍♂️ But remember the flow meter is just one of a handful of things which could be causing this kind of issue.

So next time your groups aren’t matching, and it’s not user error, feel free to reach out and we’ll get them matching up again in no time at all 🫡
