Hypertension is known as the silent killer because it often shows no symptoms until serious health complications occur.

This World Day, ECEWS encourages everyone to know their numbers, check their blood pressure regularly, and take simple steps toward a healthier life. Early detection and healthy lifestyle choices can save lives.

Together, we can prevent and control hypertension for healthier communities.

This edition of the ECEWS Rising highlights how ECEWS commemorated World Malaria Day 2026 through awareness walks across Enugu and Akwa Ibom States, alongside efforts that secured free malaria care for 1,000 pregnant women.

It also spotlights the growing global recognition of the SPEED Project, whose data-driven approach is helping shape the future of evidence-based health delivery.

We also celebrate a major milestone in Akuku-Toru, where community health insurance coverage has expanded to over 2,300 enrollees, improving access to healthcare at the grassroots level.

In our human interest story of the month, we share the journey of Stella and Henry, a family whose lives were transformed through timely, family-centred psychosocial support in paediatric HIV treatment.

Each story reflects ECEWS’ continued commitment to strengthening systems, supporting communities, and transforming lives.

The grand finale of the 2026 World Malaria Day commemoration marked a defining moment in Enugu State’s fight against malaria, as ECEWS elevated the campaign to new heights.

Held at the International Conference Center, the event convened a vibrant cross-section of society, drawing hundreds of participants from learning institutions, community beneficiaries, development partners, and key stakeholders. United by a shared purpose, attendees gathered to reinforce a collective commitment to ending malaria and advancing public health outcomes across the state.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a significant intervention by ECEWS, the provision of health insurance coverage for 1,000 pregnant women in Enugu State. This initiative underscores a strategic shift from malaria control to elimination, aligning with broader efforts led by the Enugu State Government, the Federal Ministry of Health, and global partners such as Jhpiego and World Health Organization Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of ECEWS, Dr. Andy Eyo, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to dismantling financial barriers that hinder access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. He noted that expanding access to quality care remains central to ECEWS’ mission and a critical step toward achieving malaria elimination.

The event, themed “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”, also witnessed the presence of high-level dignitaries, including the Office of the First Lady of Enugu State, led by Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the Honorable Commissioner for Health Prof. George Ugwu, alongside partners and stakeholders. Their participation further amplified the urgent call for sustained collaboration, innovation, and action in the collective drive to end malaria.

As the curtains closed on the grand finale, one message stood clear: the path to a malaria-free Enugu is not only possible, it is already in motion, driven by partnerships, commitment, and the resolve to act now.

The ECEWS Management team paid a strategic visit to Juhel Nigeria Limited, one of Nigeria’s foremost indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with the CEO Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye and management team, fostering meaningful conversations around innovation, local manufacturing, and strengthening healthcare systems in Nigeria.

A key highlight of the visit was a guided tour of Juhel’s production facilities, where our team gained firsthand insight into their operations and decades of expertise in delivering quality, affordable medicines at scale.

It was an enriching experience for the entire ECEWS team, one that reinforced the value of learning from institutions that have consistently shaped the pharmaceutical landscape in Nigeria.

We look forward to building a strong and impactful collaboration with Juhel Nigeria Limited, as we continue working together to improve health outcomes and expand access to essential medicines.
