An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body.

*What is early pregnancy scan?
An early pregnancy scan (sometimes also called a viability scan or dating scan) provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen from as early as 6weeks from the first day of you last period(LMP) and not the date of conception.

Ultrasound scan maybe recommended at various stages of pregnancy for several reasons .Here are some e.g

*To confirm the pregnancy
*To see if there is more than one baby e.g twins
*To determine the position of the placenta
*To check the baby's position before delivery
*To rule out an ectopic pregnancy _a pregnancy that implants outside the uterus (womb)
*And to check the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby in the womb

Ultrasound scan is quite safe for the baby and mother and causes only minor,if any,discomfort.
