In the 90s and years before then, folks are required to have atleast a first school leaving certificate before they can apply for any job. I can remember vividly how our neighbor back then lost a job because he could not provide the first school leaving cert.

Today, nobody really asks about that now, except maybe in some governmental institutions. That demand for most employers has been replaced with basic computer knowledge.

So I decided to write on this because I saw a thread where someone lost a front desk job in a multinational because she doesn't have knowledge of Microsoft Office Word. This is despite having good communication skills. In this generation when a 10 year old is already a computer guru and we still have graduates without basic computer knowledge.

People should know that knowing how to use office applications like Word, Excel, and powerpoint are like the very first thing you should learn even before leaving secondary school.

Whether you are a student of chemistry, medicine, banking or any other field, if you don't know how to use office packages, you are making a big mistake.
Leave whatever you are doing now and go enrol.

If you pay deaf ear to this instruction, you will probably learn this the hard way.
