Meet the engineer behind Olalecks Tech, the company that fabricated the giant pot used by Hilda Baci to cook the Largest Pot of Jollof Rice on Friday at Eko Hotel, Lagos, during the Gino World Jollof Festival.

Since Friday, this guy has been dragged after the giant pot collapsed while being hoisted on a crane for weighing.

Many blamed him, accusing him of doing substandard work — hence the near-accident situation that almost ruined the day.

But I honestly don’t think the collapse was completely his fault.

In one of her interviews, Hilda Baci herself said the event wasn’t originally planned as a Guinness World Record attempt. It was just supposed to be a fun food experience.

So the whole Guinness World Record idea was an afterthought. And by that time, Olalecks Tech and his team had already constructed the pot.

Now, note this…

Most of the people calling out the engineering firm are saying the pot should have had a stronger skeletal framework. One person even said, “even the legs had no proper support.”

True, a massive pot like that — which was eventually hoisted under a crane — should have been braced for extra support. But since it wasn’t originally built with those expectations in mind, Mr. Ola and his team may not have paid much attention to those details.

Still, they had time to add reinforcements later, and maybe they didn’t see the calamity coming.

For me, the real problem was the poor heat source provided for a pot that size.

How can a pot that wide and massive be powered by just six or seven giant industrial burners? How was the heat supposed to spread across the base evenly to allow proper cooking?

This was the major challenge Hilda faced on Friday. She struggled with uneven heat supply — that’s why cooking started around 11 am and by 1 am, the rice was still not properly done.

If you ask me, more industrial burners should have been lined under the pot. Or better still, they should have gone with firewood 🔥.
