In about a month, millions of worshippers will converge at the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove for the Osun Osogbo Festival and have direct and indirect contact with the Osun River for cultural reasons. This new report by DW News has revealed the persistent presence of heavy metals in the Osun River, caused by illegal gold miners.

The silence of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Osun State Government in monitoring the activities of miners and thoroughly enforcing the Mining Act, has further encouraged miners to continue committing environmental violations. The authorities should not look away while the lives and safety of the people are at stake.
