EPISODE ONE: The Tree That Cried Blood
The sun rose slowly over the quiet village of Umuoka. Birds sang in the trees. Women came out of their huts with their brooms, sweeping the compound as they did every morning. Children ran around with sleepy eyes, laughing and shouting.
But something was different that morning.
As the people walked to the village square to fetch water or buy food, they saw something strange. The old iroko tree that stood in the middle of the square was bleeding. Yes, blood—real, thick, red blood—was flowing from its big trunk. It ran down the bark and touched the ground like a wound.
People screamed.
“What is this?” shouted Mama Ejima, the pepper seller.
“Blood is coming out of the tree!” cried a little boy.
The village square became full of people. Everyone came to look. Some touched the blood and looked at their fingers. It was warm and thick—just like human blood. Some people ran back to their homes in fear.
The chief of the village, Chief Okafor, was called. He came quickly, wearing his red cap and holding his staff. His eyes grew wide when he saw the tree.
“This is not normal,” he said in a strong voice. “No tree should bleed. Call the medicine man now!"
