IMPORTANCE OF KOLANUT IN IGALA WEDDINGS

"In Igala land, it all begins with a kolanut..."
Before vows are exchanged or gifts presented, the kolanut leads the way. In Igala traditional weddings, this sacred fruit is more than just a gesture it carries deep spiritual and cultural meaning.

At the first introduction (Ikwu Ogo), the groom's family presents kolanuts as a sign of peace, respect, and goodwill. It's their way of saying, “We come in truth and love.”

During the traditional wedding, kolanuts are again offered this time blessed by elders, symbolizing unity, hospitality, and the beginning of a bond between two families.

To reject a kolanut is to reject the marriage itself.
To accept it? That’s the true seal of acceptance.

In Igala culture, every union is blessed with the breaking of kolanut and with it, a prayer for fertility, peace, and prosperity.
