The Roll-On Story
Yesterday, while out promoting our personal care products, I had an encounter that taught me as much about human nature as it did about effective marketing.
The Unexpected Moment
I approached a gentleman to discuss our range of deodorants and roll-ons. As I got closer, I noticed he had a noticeable body odor issue. My first instinct was to directly suggest he try our roll-on products. But his response caught me completely off guard.
Instead of being offended or defensive, he looked genuinely confused and asked, "Am I smelling? Come closer and tell me if I smell."
The Reality Check
This moment stopped me in my tracks. Here was someone who was completely unaware of his body odor situation. Rather than being in denial, he genuinely didn't know and was asking for honest feedback.
What This Taught Me
**About Marketing:**
- Sometimes people don't buy products because they don't realize they need them
- Direct sales approaches can backfire if not handled sensitively
- The best marketing often starts with education, not selling
About Personal Hygiene:
- Many people struggle with body odor awareness due to olfactory adaptation (we get used to our own scents)
- Some individuals may have medical conditions affecting their ability to detect odors
- Cultural differences in personal care practices vary widely
The Educational Moment
I realized this wasn't just a sales opportunity—it was a chance to genuinely help someone. Body odor isn't always about poor hygiene; it can result from:
- Medical conditions
- Medication side effects
- Dietary factors
- Stress and hormonal changes
- Simply not knowing the right products to use
Moving Forward
This experience reminded me that effective marketing isn't about pushing products—it's about understanding people's actual needs and helping them find solutions. Sometimes that means having uncomfortable but necessary conversations with empathy and respect.
For anyone in sales or marketing:** Remember that behind every potential customer is a real person with real needs. Approach with kindness, not judgment.
For anyone struggling with personal hygiene concerns:** You're not alone, and there are solutions. Don't hesitate to seek advice from healthcare providers or trusted friends if you're unsure about personal care routines.
