Back in 1990 in Johannesburg, South Africa, something happened that would change everything—not just for a nation, but for two lives intertwined by history. Nelson Mandela, recently released after 27 years of imprisonment for opposing apartheid, reunited with Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, his fierce wife whose activism had kept his spirit alive. Their love was a beacon in a country torn by racial segregation and violence. Yet, beneath the surface of joyous reunions lay tension; years of separation, political pressure, and the immense burden of leadership challenged their relationship. Against the backdrop of South Africa's turbulent transition to democracy, their story captured the world's attention—a love both inspiring and fraught. As Mandela rose to become the country's first Black president in 1994, their bond symbolized hope but also highlighted the personal costs of the fight for freedom. This was a romance deeply embedded within the historic dismantling of apartheid.

It all started on a Wednesday, when Wouter Basson walked into a locked laboratory at the South African Defence Force's covert research unit.

In the early 1980s, under apartheid's shadow, the state commissioned Project Coast — a secret chemical and biological weapons program.

Basson, later dubbed 'Dr. Death' by the press, oversaw experiments on toxins, crowd-control agents, delivery systems and even research into fertility-control compounds aimed at black communities. Procurement networks stretched overseas; companies and middlemen secretly supplied precursors and equipment.

Documents reveal plans for assassinations by poisoning, clandestine testing and stockpiles hidden beneath official deniability. Fear of international scrutiny led to file-burning and compartmentalized cells.

The truth began to leak after apartheid's collapse: the Truth and Reconciliation Commission exposed lists of projects, victims' testimonies and Basson's central role.

He faced trial; many charges faltered amid legal complications, but the hearings confirmed that state science had been weaponized against its own people. The conspiracy was not a single act but a state policy executed in secrecy — a systematic attempt to use science as a tool of repression.

The wounds remain; many answers were lost, but the record reshaped South Africa's reckoning with state-sponsored terror.
