Start researching effective maintenance processes now. Thermographic inspections are vital for maintaining electrical installations and assets such as transformers, switch gears, electrical panels, distribution boards, busbars, breakers, and fuses. Scheduling these tests based on priority can save significant downtime and prevent failures.
Recently, I conducted a thermographic inspection on an oil rig in the Gulf of Guinea. Initially scheduled for August, it was pushed to October, with a 5-day delay for helicopter availability. Despite these shifts, the inspection was completed within the contracted period, highlighting the flexibility and reliability of the process.
This oil rig’s commitment to thermographic inspection underscores its value in enhancing safety and preventing costly breakdowns.
Without this strategy, achieving such high safety and operational standards would be impossible.

Life is full of transitions, and each stage brings new opportunities for growth. As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of how my professional life has evolved to align with my personal passions, particularly my love for travel.
Back in 2005–2008, I was frequently in Port Harcourt, travelling across Nigeria as part of a mobile telecoms site audit team, ensuring the highest standards of quality and compliance. Those experiences are part of the foundation for where I am today.
Fast forward to 2024, and my career has taken on an exciting new dimension. As a certified thermographer, I now conduct thermographic inspections of electrical assets, working in high-demand industries like oil and gas.

From flying into the city, staying at a five-star hotel, and then boarding a helicopter to inspect oil rigs, the experience is both thrilling and fulfilling. Inspecting 415 V electrical boards has now grown to analysing a 7200 kVA drilling drive transformer on an oil rig. It’s a significant transition—from working as a mobile telecoms employee to an independent professional offering highly specialised services.
For me, this is more than just a job; it’s a journey that fuses my technical skills with my passion for exploration.

A Thermographer’s Tale
Thermography is nothing short of revelatory. It’s not just a profession; it’s a multifaceted journey that has seen me wear the hats of inspector, auditor, consultant, activist, and even volunteer. Conducting a thermographic inspection isn’t merely about scanning equipment; it’s about safeguarding lives and investments, one infrared image at a time.
Last week, I embarked on the annual thermographic inspection of one of the foremost malls in the vibrant city of Lagos, now in its fourth consecutive year, courtesy of CAXTAN Engineering Limited. The mall’s management, like many enviable properties, understands the undeniable value of regular thermographic inspections in preventing costly failures and ensuring safety.
On the second day of this year’s inspection (which typically takes at least four business days), I came across a particularly striking case. At one of the shops, the "Red" phase of a Three-Pole Breaker was reading temperatures above 60°C(Qualitative Thermography), a dangerously high level compared to similar breakers across other shops. The breaker powered the shop’s air conditioning unit but had been switched off at the time of the inspection. Yet, the onset of burning at the termination point was unmistakable. I immediately escalated the issue for urgent action, potentially preventing a significant fire hazard.
These are some of the many unseen moments where thermography shines—catching potential disasters before they occur. Thermographic inspections are, without a doubt, a crucial part of the playbook for discerning property owners and managers. The ROI is undeniable. As a thermographer, I’ve seen some rather amusing (and sometimes alarming) placements of electrical assets in commercial buildings like malls. Whether you're an owner, tenant, facility manager, vendor, or shop operator, it's crucial to consider *where* you’re installing electrical boards—not just *how* they’re installed.
During thermographic inspections, I’ve encountered electrical boards placed at dizzying heights, making it a challenge for even the tallest maintenance personnel to reach without a ladder. In other instances, cabinets are installed so close to these boards that they obstruct access, preventing the electrical board doors from being opened to the recommended 90 degrees. Not to mention shops that pile goods right up against the boards, making it nearly impossible for anyone to even see the panel, let alone work on it.
These poor practices don't just inconvenience maintenance—they can also compromise safety and increase the risk of undetected faults.
Let’s prioritise placing electrical installations in accessible, obstruction-free locations. Remember, a clear line of sight isn't just a luxury; it's essential for efficient maintenance and particularly crucial for thermographic inspections.
