All you need to know about Sexual Assault

In criminal and civil law, assault is an attempt to initiate harmful or offensive contact with a person, or a threat to do so. It is distinct from battery, which refers to the actual achievement of such contact. It is both a crime and a tort and, therefore, may result in either criminal and/or civil liability.

Sexual assault is any type of forced or coerced s*xual contact or behavior that happens without consent. Sexual assault includes r**e and attempted r**e, child molestation, and s*xual harassment or threats.

Sexual assault is any type of s*xual activity, including r**e that you do not agree to. Also called s*xual violence or abuse, s*xual assault is never your fault.

Sexual assault can include any type of s*xual contact with someone who cannot consent, such as someone who is underage, has an intellectual disability, or is passed out, R**e, Attempted r**e, Sexual coercion, Sexual contact with a child, In**st (s*xual contact between family members), Fondling or unwanted touching above or under clothes, etc.

Sexual assault can also be verbal or visual. It is anything that forces a person to join in unwanted s*xual contact or attention like Voyeurism, or peeping (when someone watches private s*xual acts without consent, Exhibitionism (when someone exposes himself or herself in public, Sexual harassment or threats, Forcing someone to pose for s*xual pictures.

Consent is a clear "yes" to s*xual activity. Not saying "no" does not mean you have given consent. Your consent means you know and understand what is going on (you are not unconscious or blacked out or intellectually disabled), you know what you want to do, you are able to say what you want to do, you are sober (not under the influence of alcohol or drugs), etc

Sometimes you cannot give legal consent to s*xual activity or contact. For example, if you are: Threatened, forced, coerced, or manipulated into agreeing, not physically able to (you are drunk, high, drugged, passed out, or asleep), not mentally able to (due to illness or disability), Younger than 16 (in most states) or 18
Remember:
• Consent is an ongoing process, not a one-time question. If you consent to s*xual activity, you can change your mind and choose to stop, even after s*xual activity has started.
• Past consent does not mean future consent. Giving consent in the past to s*xual activity does not mean you have to give consent now or in the future.

The Rising Youths Summit is to bring a positive message about character development and the importance of the decisions made in life to an audience of Teens through public and private schools, and many non-profit organization through out Nigeria and around the globe. And our long term vision is to reach out to all the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria and the continent of Africa.

Youths today continually encounter significant obstacles to their well-being and success particularly around body image, building life skills and healthy network of peers.
We strongly believe that Teens must be empowered and taught to appreciate the power of an idea and how it can change a life. We believe that ideas and choices are critical to the growth of today's youths which can either result in utter destruction or wondrous joy.

The Summit shall raise a new generation of youth leaders that will serve as peer educators to reduce youth restiveness, crimes and other anti-social behaviour, encouraging youth educational and entrepreneurial skills.
We know that empowered youths, working in partnership with adults have great power to create a lasting positive change in their communities.

With all these in mind, the Summit will explore the fundamentals of effective youths mentoring.
As a Legal Practitioner with considerable years of Practice, I have met a lot of teens in the prisons and young adults who were arrested when younger. Upon closer interaction with them, we discovered that everything went wrong with their foundation.

In the long run, except something supernatural happens, many of these young adults do not grow up to impact their society positively and as a result, resources and creativity given to them will go down with
History.

We are excited for what is yet to come and wish for the legacy to continue to grow and improve change in our world. It is our most sincere aspiration that we continue to focus on the positive components of life that have everything to do with who we become and the contributions we make to the societies in which we live.
