NBC slams N5m penalty on Channels TV for breaking broadcast code during interview with Labour party's Vice Presidential candidate, Baba Datti-Ahmed
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has slammed a fine of N5 million on Channels Television for breaking the broadcasting law during an interview with the Vice-Presidential candidate of Labour party, Datti Baba-Ahmed.
The sanction was communicated to the Chief Executive Officer of the television station in a letter titled âBroadcast of an Inciting Interview, A Sanctionâ, and signed by Balarabe Ilelah, the commissionâs Director-General.
It read in part
ââThe NBC monitored the broadcast of a live interview of the running mate of the Labour Party Vice presidential candidate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed, by the anchor of Politics Today, Seun Okibaloye, on Wednesday, March 22. Dr Baba-Ahmed said it will be unconstitutional to swear in an elected president on May 29, 2023, because of election irregularities,â
The NCC chairman stated that the interview was volatile and capable of inciting public disorder and therefore violated some sections of the broadcasting code.
This, according to him, includes the section that said no broadcast shall encourage, or incite, be repugnant to public feelings or contain an offensive reference to any person or organisation, alive or dead or generally be disrespectful to human dignity.
Ilelah added that according to the broadcasting code, broadcasters shall ensure that no programme contained anything which amounted to the subversion of constituted authority.
âConsequently, on the following infractions, Channels Television is hereby sanctioned and shall pay a penalty of N5,000,000 (five million naira) only in the first instance'' he said
He added that any further infraction by the television station would attract higher sanctions.
âYou are advised to pay within two weeks from the day of receipt of this letter or the penalty will be graduated,â the NBC Director-General said
This sanction is coming after the President-elect, Bola Tinubu petitioned the commission over the interview.

The Debt Management Office has announced that Nigeria's total public debt stock increased to N46.25tn or $103.11bn in the fourth quarter of 2022.
As of September 2022, Nigeria's debt figure was N44.06tn. The DMO said the new figure consists of the domestic and external total debt stocks of the Federal Government and the sub-national governments (36 state governments and the Federal Capital Territory).
The comparative figure of public debt as of December 31, 2021, was N39.56tn or $95.77bn. This means that the countryâs debt increased by N6.69trn or $7.34bn within one year.
The DMO said new borrowings by the FGN and sub-national governments, primarily to fund budget deficits and execute projects and the issuance of promissory notes to settle some liabilities also contributed to the growth in the debt stock.
In a debt profile breakdown, the commercial hub of the nation, Lagos, tops the states with the highest debt profile recording a total of N807.21 billion in Q4 2022, while Delta came in second with N304.25 billion and Ogun with N270.45 billion.
Jigawa recorded the lowest debt with N43.95 billion followed by Kebbi and Katsina with N61.31 billion and N62.37 billion respectively.
