In my last post, I ended with a question.
"What makes music teaching effective and how can you be sure that your teaching is always effective?"
The first step to effective teaching is preparation.

So, how do we prepare to teach?

1. Study properly and ensure you develop good subject knowledge and proficiency on your instruments.

2. Determine the kind of school you will like to teach. Is it a public school or private school or an international school(i.e primary/secondary) or is it a music school. There are standards and requirements peculiar to these schools. The skill required for you to thrive in one may not be adequate for the other. Alot of musicians want to teach music in a regular school the way it is being taught in a music school or consevratory and have experienced numerous frustrations because they are not meeting the required standards even though they are experts in their fields.

3. Once the school has been determined, seek to understand the curriculum approach the school has adopted. It will give you insights on the role your subject play in that curriculum and how to develop a workable pedagogy for your students in that school.

4. You need a mentor whose work will be to nurture your professional growth to help you grow and develop your teaching skills. This person must be someone with years of experience because they will expose you to teaching skills which has nothing to do with the music knowledge that you have ganered already.

5. You will need to practise the skills your mentor exposes you to. Teaching is an Art and requires regular practice to gain mastery just the way you practise your musical instrument.

Lastly, Prepare earnestly for recruitment opportunities when they open. Many a times, your mentor will more likely be aware of these opportunities and can inform you about what is required to be considered for employment and they can recommend you if they are confident in your ability...to be continued.
