Customs Generates ₦7b from Kano Free Zone in April 2026, Beats ₦1.8b Record of 2025

The Kano/Jigawa Command of Nigeria Customs Service has recorded a revenue collection amounting to ₦7b from the Kano Free Trade Zone in April 2026 showing a remarkable increase above the ₦1.8b collected during the same period of 2025 from the zone

Deputy Comptroller Usman Adamu, the Acting Area Controller of the command who disclosed this at a sensitisation programme, commended stakeholders for their compliance while urging them to further embrace modernisation and other tools of trade facilitation.

According to Customs Public Relations Officer,Tahir Balarabe, the sensitisation event which was graced by the Zonal Coordinator, Zone B, Assistant Comptroller General of Customs (ACG) Nsikan Umoh and key stakeholders operating within the Command, featured a series of presentations on key operational areas, including excise operations, Customs clearance procedures, trade facilitation in the Free Trade Zone and the Unified Customs Management System, popularly known as B’Odogwu.

Balarabe,a Chief Superintendent of Customs disclosed in a press release that the presentations provided stakeholders with practical insights into regulatory requirements, cargo clearance processes and the Service’s ongoing modernization efforts aimed at enhancing compliance, improving operational efficiency and facilitating legitimate trade.

The release quoted Acting Controller Adamu saying “I would like to specially commend our stakeholders for their level of compliance since my assumption of duty as the Acting Customs Area Controller, which has translated into measurable outcomes. In the Frese Trade Zone (FTZ) alone, the Command recorded a remarkable performance in the month of April, generating about 7 billion Naira in 2026 compared to 1.8 billion Naira in the corresponding period of 2025. However, the reward for compliance is more compliance. That is why this sensitization exercise is organized to consolidate the gains achieved.” He stated.

Speaking during the event, ACG Umoh commended the stakeholders for their continued cooperation and urged them to embrace ongoing reforms and technological innovations introduced by the Service.

“I want to appreciate the level of participation by the stakeholders and encourage them to embrace the technological innovations of the Service. This sensitization exercise is designed to enhance the understanding of the Customs clearance processes and procedures for greater efficiency and compliance.” She said.

The Command expressed confidence that the exercise would enhance stakeholders’ understanding of Customs operations and improve compliance levels while reaffirming its commitment to continuous stakeholder engagement and capacity building.

Kano/Jigawa Customs, APM Terminals Strengthen Ties to Boost Trade Facilitation

The Kano/Jigawa Area Command, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has strengthened its partnership with APM Terminals following a courtesy visit by the company’s Managing Director, Kamal Rashad, to the Command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Tahir Balarabe who disclosed this in a press release, the visit was primarily aimed at introducing the leadership of APM Terminals and discussing areas of mutual interest to enhance trade facilitation, operational efficiency and compliance in cargo handling and clearance processes.

Receiving the delegation, the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Usman Adamu, expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed the Command’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the terminal operator to maximize its operational potential.

Adamu noted that APM Terminals remains one of the largest terminals in Kano in terms of capacity and cargo throughput, adding that the Command is committed to supporting the terminal, particularly in the area of export development.

He further stated that with its strong compliance record, APM Terminals has the capacity to emerge as a leading revenue contributor within the Kano area.

In his remarks, Rashad thanked the Command for its continued support and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding operations at its Kano facility. He disclosed that his leadership oversight covers both the Kano terminal and the Apapa operations.

According to him, the visit was prioritised due to Kano’s significant market potential, noting that the company is determined to strengthen its operational footprint and improve service delivery in the region.

The engagement also served as a strategic platform to consolidate the existing cordial relationship between the Customs Command and APM Terminals, with both parties expressing commitment to improving compliance, enhancing trade facilitation and maximizing the operational capacity of the Kano terminal.
