Lunar Eclipse Basics
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon.
Normally, the Moon reflects sunlight directly, appearing bright white or silver.
During an eclipse, Earth blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
Why It Turns Red
Even though Earth blocks the Sun’s direct rays, some sunlight still bends around Earth through its atmosphere.
The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light (blue and green) more strongly.
Longer wavelengths (red and orange) pass through more easily and get bent toward the Moon.
This reddish light shines on the Moon’s surface, giving it the eerie red or copper glow.
Variation in Color
The exact shade of red depends on Earth’s atmosphere at the time.
If the atmosphere is clear, the Moon may glow bright copper-red.
If there’s a lot of dust, ash, or pollution, it may appear darker, even brownish-red.
