*Disc degeneration and its conservative Management*
The human spinal column is composed of 33 individual bones known as vertebrae & act as the body’s main support structure.
Between each vertebra are flexible discs that act as cushions. Because the spine must be both stable as well as flexible, it can be particularly prone to injury, and can degenerate over time.
Degenerative disc - This describe changes in the spinal discs & this is due to wear and tear over time. As people age, the discs undergo changes making them dry out, thin or crack. This makes the soft cartilage core bulge or herniate through the fibrous outer portion of the disc.
Herniated disc- With a herniated disc, the center of the disc ruptures, the disc becomes smaller and is no longer able to provide as much cushioning, which can result in back pain, sciatica or other issues. Herniated discs can be caused by injury or from the normal wear and tear of aging.
Bulge disc- This creates pressure points on nearby nerves which leads to a variety of sensations. Evidence of a bulging disc may range from mild tingling and numbness to moderate or severe pain, depending on the severity. It occurs mostly at the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine.
Physical therapy serves as a conservative management in any of the degeneration of disc listed above and this helps to alleviate the pain.
