Fuel From Air Could Change the Future of Transport.

Japan is pushing synthetic fuel closer to reality through a demonstration plant built by ENEOS in Yokohama. The facility produces e-fuel by capturing carbon dioxide and combining it with hydrogen extracted from water using renewable electricity.

Operations began in 2024, and the plant has already produced initial batches of liquid fuel. Real-world testing has also started, including use in a shuttle bus connected to preparations for Expo 2025 Osaka.

The promise is huge. Synthetic fuel can have energy density similar to conventional petroleum, making it especially useful for sectors where batteries are difficult to scale, such as aviation, shipping, heavy transport, and industrial machinery.

Unlike fossil fuels, which release carbon stored underground, synthetic fuels aim to recycle carbon already present in the atmosphere. If powered by renewable energy, the overall emissions impact could be much lower.

But the challenge is still serious. Producing e-fuel requires large amounts of clean electricity, making it expensive compared with conventional fuels today.

The dream is real, but the road ahead is long. If Japan can make synthetic fuel affordable at scale, the future of energy may shift from drilling oil to manufacturing fuel from air, water, and sunlight.
