They praised her in public, but gossiped about her behind closed doors. Until one day, someone followed her — and what he saw left him speechless.

Anita didn’t know she was being watched.

As the choir ended their final song that Sunday, Elder Mfon narrowed his eyes from the last bench. He had always found Anita… suspicious. Too perfect. Too quiet. Too private.

So he decided to follow her.

He didn’t tell anyone — not even his wife. He waited near the mango tree beside the back fence, just far enough not to be noticed.

And right on time… Anita slipped away.

He followed at a distance, careful not to step on dry leaves or broken bottles.

She crossed the third street. Turned into the alley behind the mechanic’s shop. Entered the abandoned building.

He waited five minutes. Then crept to the dusty window.

What he saw made his chest tighten.

Inside, Anita sat on the bare floor, surrounded by six barefoot children. One was limping. Another had burns on his arms. The smallest girl sat quietly, cradling a doll made from tied rags.

Anita opened her handbag and brought out Sunday rice in transparent bags. She shared it. Water. Small snacks. Soft words.

Then, she began to read them Bible stories from her phone, acting the parts like a drama teacher.

Elder Mfon’s hands trembled on the wall.

He felt hot shame crawl up his spine.

For months, he had assumed the worst. But here she was… being more Christian than all of them.
