: January 15, 1977, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The opening ceremony of the Festival of African Culture (Festac '77).

Festac ’77 was the second edition of the World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (the first was in Dakar, Senegal in 1966). The month-long event (January 15 - February 12) celebrated African culture and showcased our music, arts, literature and religion.

With about 16,000 participants representing 56 African countries and Africans in the diaspora, the event saw music performances from the likes of Stevie Wonder from the US, Miriam Makeba from SA, Giberto Gil from Brazil, among others.

Most of the events were held in four main venues: the National Theatre, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos City Hall and Tafawa Balewa Square.

The festival events usually began at 9 am, lasting till midnight.
